SAA Training Ethos
PUTTING STUDENTS FIRST BY INVESTING IN STAFF
St Augustine Academy is committed to putting the students first by investing heavily in our own staff. We have a proven track record of "Growing Our Own Leaders" at every level, with many of our current staff starting their careers at St Augustine Academy and going on to hold positions of responsibility. The pledge we make to all our staff, teaching and non-teaching, is demonstrated first and foremost in Initial Teacher Training.
INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING
We are committed to teacher training and work with a large group of schools and training providers as the Lead school in Maidstone for teacher training through UCAS ensuring training opportunities are vast and varied drawing on a wealth of experience to fully support the next generation of the teaching profession.
The Academy has its own exclusive Teacher Training Centre, which may be hired by outside parties. At present we are close strategic partners with SCITT Kent and Medway Training Consortium, providing the accommodation and expertise through our own staff to provide school based experiences. We also work very closely supporting trainee teachers with Canterbury Christ Church University Initial Teacher Training University & Brighton University.
As a school we are experienced in providing and supporting all forms of teacher training: Schools Direct (salaried and unsalaried), Assessment Only and Post Graduate Routes. Furthermore we are registered on the government School Experience Programme offering potential teachers the chance to spend time in schools gaining valuable experience and insight before applying for teacher training courses. You may spend up to ten days at the Academy as part of the programme. Please click on the link below.

NEWLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS (NQT)
Teachers in their first year of qualifying to teach must undergo a statutory year of induction. In that year their teaching is closely monitored whilst also ensuring the right support is given to allow young teachers to flourish. Working alongside Kent LEA programme of induction, St Augustine Academy has developed a rigorous programme that allows individual needs to be met through a system of target setting through our bespoke online e-portfolio, action plans and ultimately, celebration. All newly qualified teachers have access to an induction tutor and regular meetings with a subject based mentor, as well as a ten percent reduced timetable to assist with planning, preparation and assessment. Further support is available through a thriving staff community; each NQT is closely linked with a successful Curriculum Coach who becomes their NQT buddy. Regular observation, with appropriate foci and termly celebration of progress with the Assistant Principal who leads on delivering our NQT programme ensures a very high percentage of successful completion of induction. St Augustine Academy boasts successful completion of induction of over 10 members of the teaching profession over the last five years, many of which still remain at the Academy in positions of responsibility.
