World Book Week adventure!

Wow! What a fabulous adventure we have been on in Book Week. After being disrupted by the snow monster, we started the week with a relaunch of all our World Book week activities. What a wonderful week it has been indeed! Many students and staff stepped through the library doors to enter a magical world and reading was celebrated in many ways throughout the whole Academy, with a host of activities. From Harry Potter to Alice in Wonderland – our hearts were singing!

Monday began with an Open Book Mic session in the library and students taking the floor with some very funny ‘stand up’ joke telling. Our thinking skills were challenged on Tuesday with some truly memorable Book Charades. Wednesday, our tummies were full as our Cake Sale opened its doors.

We had fun spotting book characters strolling through the Academy corridors and many staff and students dressed up as a character from a book. The Golden Ticket, won by students as a reward for their reading, became the most wanted item as one was necessary for entry to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party (now an memorable event of Book Week).
Author visit - What a treat! On Thursday afternoon, all of Year 7 settled into the Hall to be taken on a magical journey of writing and ideas with our visiting author Kit Cox. He held us transfixed with his ideas about writing and reading; it was lovely to be read to by someone who thought of the story. It was great to see students taking part and we all left with a head full of stories, monsters and mysteries.

On Friday the stakes were high on two accounts  - fashion parade was on! The non-school uniform day was in full swing as our important fund-raising event for the library. Reputations were also on the line with the esteemed Scavenger Hunt - teams pitted their wits against each-other and searched for clues around the Academy.

In addition to this we have had Book Quizzes in Mentor  time where the whole mentor group has been able to work together.  Students at break times have been busy trying to identify staff in the ‘Staff Facebook’ Challenge and have been voting in the Literary Big Brother this week. Competitions have been running – Bookmark Design and Manga Comic Cover Design whilst some students have been using their wits to guess (or is that estimate) the number of books in the library.

Phew! Hardly been any time to read a book this week! But what an amazing end to our World Book Week.

It has indeed been a truly miraculous week with a celebration of reading allowing us all to believe in a little bit of magic.

Carry on reading.

See you again next year…
