Christmas Carol Service

Each year, the Academy staff and students completely fill St Michael’s Church for 3 consecutive days for our Christmas Carol Service with each day devoted to a different Chapter. Years 7 & 8 students formed a choir which sang a number of carols and were then joined by the full congregation for a couple of old favourites – Good King Wenceslas and Ding Dong Merrily on High. The Academy’s ‘Signing Group’ also sang – and signed – a carol during the service directed by Mr Hewett.

Each service was officiated by Rev’d Kes who also contributed a beautiful rendition of ‘The Snowman’. A further surprise for all present was another solo; the classic ‘Last Christmas’, this time performed by Ms Lay which was hugely applauded and cheered by everyone! Several students also contributed readings and bravely sang solo verses of carols with a memorable solo from Ben Piles of Year 7.

This year, the valuable work done by the Academy’s support staff and their vital contribution to the smooth running of the Academy was acknowledged by the awarding of the ‘Spirit of Christmas’ shield which was accepted on their behalf by Mrs Jones and Mrs Bradshaw.

The centre piece of Wednesday’s service was the presentation of a cheque by our Senior Head Boy, Lewis Muir and Senior Head Girl, Taqiyah Mefla, to a representative from the Maidstone Winter Night Shelter charity. Taqiyah said that the Academy ‘would like to thank the Maidstone Winter Night Shelter charity for all the amazing work they do and for giving us the opportunity to raise £267 for you. Thank you also to everyone who attended the Carol Service at All Saints Church last Sunday and helped us to raise such a fantastic amount of money for such a worthy charity.’

A huge thank you was also due to all the staff who helped to make the services run smoothly as well as to Mr Spanner, our intrepid accompanist on both the church organ and piano.
