Holocaust Memorial week

During Term 3, students in Year 7 have been reading the novel ‘The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas’. As part of their studies into the key themes of the novel, all students were challenged to work as a team and use available resources to create an appropriate memorial to the Holocaust.  Each Year 7 class was allowed to elect one group to represent their class at the final showcase on Wednesday 27th January to be judged by Mr Leatherbarrow, Reverend Kes and Mrs Baker.  In total, six groups competed in the showcase and, although the scoring was extremely close, the competition was won by a group from 7Holly. The winning students were:  Boklarka Babarian, Brandon Kelly, Louise Newell, Ivan Chubarenko and Rachel Barry. In second place were Mollie Sunnucks, Rebecca Lee and Keira Humphrey, with a little help from Amy John.  In third place were Jasmine Freethy, Lily Carey, Lucy Collier and Bethan Taylor.  The other finalists were Leo Allsep, Connor Underdown, Matthew Owen, Callum Demery, Mia Borkett, Lauren Stammers, Lauren Joy, Chloe Colegate, Lorraine Smith, Sarah Pilbeam, Alex Sabalionyte and Lauren Carr.

Overall, students responded really well to the Memorial Task and were able to produce a wide variety of memorials that sensitively and appropriately represent the tragedy of the Holocaust – well done everyone!
