St Augustine Academy Welcomes Champion Boxer

Students who attend St Augustine Academy’s ‘Golden Gloves’ Boxing club were in awe of their special visitor at this week’s training session.  Nine times number one in the UK, two times European medallist and one of the first females to box for England, Hannah Beharry spent an hour with the students.

She was visiting the Academy as it runs the best attended satellite boxing gym in 2015/16, not just in Kent but in the entire UK based on the average number of students attending over a 25 week period.

Sparring and passing on tips and techniques, students were totally focussed on learning as much as they could from the champion. The club was set up by Academy teacher, Chris Gibbs, who runs it with the assistance of Lee Owen of Westree Boxing Club in Maidstone and is one of the most popular after-school activities run by the Academy.

Hannah chose to walk away from a life of crime at the age of 17 and got involved in boxing and from then on has achieved fantastic sporting success which has spurred her on to devoting much of her time visiting schools, motivating  and mentoring young people to change their lives for the better.

The training session finished with Hannah giving medals to Callum Ashton (gold) and Ryan Wade (silver) who had impressed her with their effort and technique during the session.
