Students on trial!

Giving up a day of their weekend was probably a trial enough but 45 students from St Augustine Academy spent a Saturday competing in the annual Mock Trial Competition at Maidstone Magistrates Court.  The students had to take on the roles of the people you would find in a court during a real trial.  This meant they became lawyers, magistrates, witnesses, reporters, artists and even a suspect.

Despite successfully defending the suspect in two trials, neither team was able to win the overall competition, despite coming close.  It was, however, a hugely successful day in terms of developing their Citizenship skills and knowledge of the justice system in the UK.

Special mentions should go to our team of lawyers who did a fantastic job of arguing  the relevant points in the case in difficult circumstances:  the lawyers were India Capsalis, Stan Bastable, Joe Gibb, Victoria Laniyan, Alfie McCarthy, Alicia Ford, Oliver Duey and Caitlin Davidson. Mr Gibbs, the Citizenship teacher, said that ‘all students who participated in the competition were an absolute credit to the Academy and will always be champions in my eyes!’
