St Augustine Academy Weightlifting Competition success

St Augustine Academy in Maidstone is one of only a small number of schools around the county that have a weightlifting club with a team of keen and active students regularly entering competitions.

Last week, seven members of the St Augustine Academy Weightlifting Team travelled to Oldbury, West Midlands to take part in the British Schools Championships. This national event is very well attended with lifters from all over the country including the Glasgow Gladiators who are part of the Scottish National Team.  The standard at the competition was very high with Scottish and English records being set and broken. It was a great experience for the students from the Academy, who have only been training as a team since September 2014 and who achieved fantastic results and a number of ‘personal best’ records.

Four silver medals were achieved by Matthew Abraham, Eron Murray, Carys Harper and Dan Vine.  Bronze went to Adam Patient and Stan Martin. Joe Reilly just missed out on fourth place, only losing to competitors who had qualified for the Commonwealth Games!
