Harvest time at the Academy

The last assembly of term 1 is always devoted to the Harvest Festival theme at the Academy with its celebration of food production and the donation of items to include in ‘Harvest boxes’ for struggling families in the local community.

Mentor groups had been bringing in donations of non-perishable food and then making wonderfully decorated boxes to hold the items which had made a colourful display in the sports hall where the entire Academy had gathered.

The assembly started with the awarding of certificates in recognition of students’ achievements both within the Academy and also for completing sections of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme. This was interspersed with readings and musical items by students.

Our guest at the assembly was David Blackman from the Salvation Army who was going to distribute the Harvest boxes to the local food banks. However, not content with that donation, our Senior Student Leadership Team, led by Ms Lay, had held a non-uniform day that week and had raised a magnificent total of £850 which has been split between the Salvation Army gaining £500 and MIND, the mental health charity, having £350.

Well done to everyone who contributed to these two marvellous donations for others in our society who really need help and support.
