Careers Week and Alumni visits

Posted on: 3rd Feb 2023

Last week, the Academy hosted careers week, which was organised by the careers and work experience team.

Every day the mentor groups across the Academy had something different to go through from looking at labour market information as well as a careers quiz, some year groups also visited by ex-students. They came to provide a talk about their time and experiences at the Academy, as well as the time after leaving.

Katie Sampson, who came to visit year 7 on Friday, is now studying in the sixth form at Maidstone Girls Grammar. Katie provided advice about life at St Augustine Academy and the opportunities that she pursued during her time here, as well as guidance and advice about different subjects for GCSE options, and pathways available at the end of Year 11.

Gemma Gibb came to visit Year 9e on Wednesday. Gemma left the Academy in 2016 and was able to provide the Year 9s with an insight into life after leaving St Augustine Academy. This includes her time at sixth form and University, as well as some of the challenges she has faced going into adult life. Gemma spoke about the opportunities that were provided to her during her time at St Augustine Academy, and also the educational providers that she’s been to since she had left us. Gemma provided advice around GCSEs and also the choosing of post 16 options.

We are thankful for the visit of both Gemma and Katie to St Augustine Academy, as this provides our students with an opportunity to see those who have come before, and what they’ve been up to since leaving St Augustine Academy, providing them with aspiration and determination to succeed .

During the week key stage three students were set a challenge of finding a range of different careers from the different members of staff around the Academy.

During mentor time, the mentor groups were challenged to find the different careers using up-to-date labour market information. They had to find a career with the highest pay, lowest replacement and highest growth.

Staff also created posters around the careers that they have previously before working at St Augustine Academy, as well as what they wanted to do when they grew up. These provide students with realistic examples of the different careers our staff have had.

Thank you and well done to all those that took part in different activities and challenges throughout the week. Watch out during mentor time for prizes and certificates for everyone that took part.
