YEAR 7 THE DA VINCI CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE 1 : BIOLOGICAL DRAWING

Draw, paint, sketch or digitally create artwork capturing animal or plant anatomy

Your artwork should:

  • include information on the subject you are drawing, such as labels pointing out the key features or annotations describing the appearance of these features.
  • include your name and be submitted via email, as a JPEG photo of your original work on A4 or A3 paper, or in the form of a JPEG file for digital artwork.

Should I use paper of a particular size?

You can draw on paper of any size, as long as you can scan your entry or send us a photo!

Can I include more than one drawing?

Yes! As long as they are of the same animal or plant. For example, you might choose to draw the external appearance of an animal as well as a more detailed drawing of one of its limbs.

What happens to my artwork?

We will be selecting the most original, creative and scientific drawings to be published on our website.

Submit a photo/copy of your work onto the assignment in your Careers class or please give it to Mr Muir or Mr Rickett in W014/W019.

CHALLENGE 2 : DESIGNING FROM NATURE

Inspired by your biological drawing, design a structure or object that will be useful for humans. Look at the shapes in your chosen biological form and, if you are able, research or imagine why this shape is good for the plant or animal. Then design a structure or object for human use inspired by this form.

You should:

  • Let us know what form/shape in nature your idea is inspired by.
  • Show or explain why this form is effective for your design.

You can present your design as a labelled drawing, a written description, or a combination of both, but all designs should include your name and be submitted by email (take a photo if it’s a drawing).

Submit a photo/copy of your work onto the assignment in your Careers class or please give it to Mr Muir or Mr Rickett in W014/W019.

CHALLENGE 3 : SELLING YOUR DESIGN

Create a poster, advert, speech or video to persuade an investor to build your design from Challenge 2.

You should:

  • Tell us about what you did in Challenge 1 and 2, why you did it, and any further research you did.
  • Think about all the good points of your design, especially the bits inspired by nature.
  • If you can think of any negative points try to give a counter argument against these.

Submit a photo/copy of your work onto the assignment in your Careers class or please give it to Mr Muir or Mr Rickett in W014/W019.
